color is always, first and foremost, relative. In these paintings, color matters most.
Nearly every day Philip has walked along the Lake Washington shore. As a routine, this walking may be ordinary, but it is within that repetition that he finds the space to listen and to think. He is a painter less interested in what can be said out loud, or what theoretical stance can be inserted through the making of a painting. For him, painting is a process, it is continual, like the steps taken during a walk. It is a time to look and perceive and look again.
Titles of paintings often come off as subjective or problematic as they beg to make a story where one isn’t needed. It may sound outdated and old-fashioned, but these paintings are about paint. To call some of them “Lake” seems good enough, if only to remember the place.
