Joshua Thompson KNAVES OUT

August 4-September 30, 2021

Season is proud to announce KNAVES OUT, an exhibition of new paintings by Seattle artist Joshua Thompson for the 2021 edition of The Seattle Deconstructed Art Fair.  Opening reception will be Saturday August 7, 3-6 pm and will continue to the end of September.  Hours are by appointment, please contact robert@season.cz to arrange a visit.  Through the collaborative efforts of the gallery community, the SDAF returns with its hybrid format of online and in-person exhibitions.  More information and locations of over 50 participating galleries can be found at seattledeconstructedartfair.com.

The paintings in Knaves Out are an extension of the playing card collages that Joshua began at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.  The purpose of the collages was to break down and peel back the layers to expose hidden structures of violence and privilege beneath their Western European pageantry.  in these new oil paintings (all are dated 2021), the dense opaqueness and physical thickness of the layers of white paint sit on the Kings, Queens, and Jacks, so as to obscure the histories in the under-paintings.  The mundane playing card, already loaded with a history, now carries the burden of the histories of our world dominated by colonialism, white supremacy, and hetero-normative-patriarchal violence. Joshua Thompson lives and works in Seattle, Washington.  He received his BFA from the University of West Florida and his MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, his work has been show in numerous venues across the Pacific Northwest.  This is Joshua’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and his first solo show since 2018.
